The Stage Door Choir: Embracing the Challenge of Queen's

Updated: Sep 12

A Bold Vocal Journey

This term at The Stage Door Choir, we took on one of the biggest vocal challenges in rock history: Queen’s epic Somebody to Love from We Will Rock You. This powerhouse anthem is filled with longing, grit, and raw emotion. We threw ourselves into it with open hearts and full voices.

But this wasn’t just any choir session. In a bold and slightly nerve-wracking twist, we offered our singers the chance to try out solo lines at the end of the song. This was not a performance requirement but a pressure-free opportunity to get creative, explore personal expression, and feel empowered. At The Stage Door Choir, we never expect anyone to sing solo. It’s always about encouragement, not expectation. Watching members support one another in that spirit was as inspiring as the music itself.

Stepping Out of Comfort Zones

For many of our members, solo singing is well outside their comfort zone. However, that didn’t stop a number of brave, brilliant voices from stepping up to the challenge. And what a moment it was! Each soloist brought something unique—from soulful vulnerability to full-blown Freddie Mercury flair. The best part? Every attempt, every note, and every brave voice was met with huge cheers, encouragement, and support from the rest of the group.

Because that’s what The Stage Door Choir is all about: lifting each other up, celebrating every step, and growing together through music.

In We Will Rock You, Somebody to Love is performed by Scaramouche, one of the show's central characters. This standout moment showcases not only her vocal power but also her vulnerability and search for connection in a world that silences individuality. Taking on a song with that kind of theatrical and emotional weight gave our choir the chance to step into her shoes. We aimed to sing not just with technical precision, but with heart. Whether in solo lines or full harmonies, we sought to honour that spirit and channel a bit of Scaramouche's fire in every phrase.

The Complexity of the Song

Taking on Somebody to Love is no small feat. With its soaring vocal range, rich gospel-inspired harmonies, and raw emotional intensity, it’s one of Queen’s most vocally and musically demanding songs. From the very first note, it requires total commitment—breath control, dynamic precision, and the ability to blend while still delivering individual expression. The intricate layers of harmony test our timing and listening skills, while the dramatic build of the song pushes us to dig deep emotionally and connect with the story we're telling.

But that’s exactly why we chose it. Songs like this push us out of our comfort zones. They stretch us as singers, challenge our musicianship, and strengthen our ability to work as an ensemble. Whether you're singing lead, supporting in harmony, or simply showing up to learn something new, every member grows through the process—vocally, creatively, and in confidence.

The Empowering Experience

Taking on Somebody to Love gave us all a chance to push beyond our usual limits. It reminded us how empowering it can be to take a risk in a safe, supportive space. Whether you nailed a spontaneous solo line or simply sang your heart out in the chorus, you were part of something electric.
