A Pint, a Song, and a Whole Lot of Heart: Our Visit to The Choir of Man

This term began on a high note – quite literally – as The Stage Door Choir took a trip to see The Choir of Man, where our talented friend David Booth is currently performing. From the moment we arrived, we knew we were in for something different, something truly memorable.

Before the show even began,we found ourselves having a pint on stage – yes, on stage – at the show’s fully functioning, onstage working bar "The Jungle Pub". It was great fun to pull up a stool and have a pint alongside the cast as they welcomed us into their pub, it felt like the perfect way to blur the line between audience and performance..  It was warm, it was real, and it set the tone for what was to come - the perfect start to an evening that celebrates the power of music and community in a way that few shows can.

Then came the show. What followed was 90 minutes of pure joy – a whirlwind of rich harmonies, heartfelt monologues, foot-stomping energetic choreography, and unexpected moments of emotion, camaraderie and raw, honest storytelling. The Choir of Man isn’t just a performance – it’s an experience. The talent on that stage was off the charts, and of course, we couldn't have been prouder seeing David shine among such a stellar cast.

So many moments of this incredible show reminded us why we do what we do. It celebrates not just music, but connection – the very thing that lies at the heart of any great choir.

We also want to give a special shout-out to another dear friend of ours – Freddie Huddleston, whose incredible work as choreographer and movement director plays a vital role in the show’s dynamic energy. Freddie’s creative vision brings the whole piece to life, blending slick choreography with natural, pub-inspired movement that feels authentic, accessible, and utterly joyful. His influence is all over the production – and it’s a huge part of what makes it so unforgettable.

After the show, we were lucky to catch up with David afterwards and chat about the deeper message behind the production: how music, friendship, and shared space can be life-changing. Hearing the stories about what it’s like to be part of this unique production – the bond shared by the cast members, the energy it takes, and the love they have for bringing this experience to audiences night after night – only deepened our admiration.

It’s a message we live and breathe in The Stage Door Choir. Being part of a choir isn’t just about singing in harmony – it’s about finding your people. It’s about turning up to rehearsal after a hard day and leaving with your soul a little lighter.

Time and again, studies have shown the benefits of singing in a choir – reduced anxiety, improved mood, a stronger sense of community, and a boost in confidence and mental health. But we don’t need the studies to tell us. We feel it every week when we come together, lift our voices, and support one another.

The Choir of Man is a beautiful, foot-tapping, beer-clinking reminder of how important these connections are. It speaks directly to what we as a choir already know: that music has the power to heal, uplift, and bring people together in the most unexpected and joyful ways. It’s not every day a night at the theatre feels like a night out with old friends. The Choir of Man is more than a show – it’s a celebration of music, brotherhood, and connection.
